More than $1 Million Distributed to Local Nonprofits

The Central New York Community Foundation recently distributed $1,127,321 in grants to local nonprofits.

The Central New York Community Foundation recently distributed $1,127,321 in grants to local nonprofits; the William & Mary L. Thorpe Charitable Fund, a donor-advised fund administered at the Community Foundation, contributed $25,000 toward the funding. The following organizations received grants in June:

ARTS, CULTURE & HUMANITIES

CNY Arts- $35,000   

Host one year of art exhibitions featuring underrepresented local artists

CNY Jazz Arts Foundation- $47,790          

Make upgrades to its building and expand its music education programs

Everson Museum of Art- $30,000

Host an art exhibition featuring local Onondaga Nation artist Frank Buffalo Hyde to celebrate Indigenous culture and history

India Community Religious & Cultural Center- $44,324

Install a new elevator to make its building accessible for patrons

Symphoria- $20,770

Host its free 2023 summer concert series that takes place at different locations throughout Central New York

EDUCATION

Building Men Program- $20,000

Provide training, mentorship and equipment for two new program facilitators

LiteracyCNY- $30,000

Support the operating costs of its Digital Literacy Program that helps bridge the digital divide

United Way of CNY- $50,000

Support the operating costs of its Book Buddies program that provides one-on-one volunteer based reading assistance for children in the Syracuse City School District

Whole Me- $50,000

Launch a full-time preschool program for children who are deaf and hard-of-hearing

HEALTHCARE

American Cancer Society- $10,000

Support transport services and lodging for patients with cancer

American Diabetes Association- $15,000

Implement Project Power, an initiative to slow childhood obesity in Central New York

Centers at St. Camillus- $60,000

Replace bedroom furniture in its nursing facilities to create a homelike environment for residents

Syracuse Lions Club- $3,500

Purchase a WelchAllyn RetnaVue camera to use for eye screenings

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

PEACE, Inc.- $50,000

Purchase materials and equipment for its staff and volunteers to use for delivering its free tax preparation program

Syracuse Film Center- $62,500

Host its JOBS ON SET economic development program that helps local residents build prosperous careers in Central New York’s film industry

Syracuse University/WISE Women’s Business Center- $50,000

Partner with The Hub to increase awareness of programs and resources for female entrepreneurs in Madison County

HUMAN SERVICES

Aurora of CNY- $89,350

Support startup costs of a social/vocational program for students who are hard-of-hearing or have an Auditory Processing Disorder

Food Bank of CNY- $50,000

Purchase and install a new cooler at its warehouse to increase storage capacity

Helio Health- $50,000

Renovate the reception area of its new building on James Street

InterFaith Works of Central New York- $50,000

Hire a program coordinator for its Food Justice Initiative that distributes food to Syracuse neighborhoods with the highest rates of poverty and food insecurity

Joseph’s House for Women- $60,000

Install two new rooftop air conditioning units

LAUNCH CNY- $20,000

Purchase a seven passenger vehicle to transport clients to medical appointments, volunteering engagements and recreational activities

Road to Emmaus Ministry of Syracuse- $50,000

Renovate its East Glen Ave building to accommodate the growing need for more space to host in-house programs for children and families

Samaritan Center- $29,200

Renovate a Case Management Annex connected to its building to expand its case management services

Volunteer Lawyers Project of CNY- $50,000

Expand its offerings of legal support to MWBE businesses

PUBLIC & SOCIETAL BENEFIT

FOCUS Greater Syracuse- $54,887

Launch a 6-month planning and design phase for a community-wide visioning project

Partnership for Community Development- $45,000

Create a Nine Mile Swamp public park and boat launch
